GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHY

Y unnan Province is located in the southwestern border of China, at 21°8’32’’N-29°15’8’’N, 97°31’39’’E-106°11’47’’E, with the Tropic of Cancer through the south of the province. The maximum west-east horizontal distance is 864.9 km, and the maximum north-south longitudinal distance is 900 km. It covers a total area of 394,000 km2, accounting for 4.1% of total land area of China, ranking No. 8 in China.

Due to terrain and different weather systems, special conditions often occur in latitudinal distribution of temperature of the province, and the phenomenon that “it is hot in the north and cold in the south” occurs.

E specially in terms of vertical distribution, as there are many mountains, riverbed erosion is deepened continuously and high mountains and deep valleys are formed. From river valleys to the top of mountains, different climate types caused by the increase of height exist. On the general, temperature decreases by about 0.6℃ with each 100 m rise of highland. “One may see four seasons in one single mountain, and can experience weather changes in just 10 km.” It shows its characteristics of “three-dimensional climate”. 2. Because of its location in low latitude highland, air is dry and thin. The sunshine obtained by different regions increases or decreases with changes in solar altitude and it is also impacted by cloud and rain.

I n summer, the average temperature of the hottest days is about 19-22℃; in winter, the average temperature of the coldest months is over 6-8℃.
