SHANXI
山西

S hanxi, “Jin” for short, is in the west of Taihang Mountains and the east of Yellow River. Shanxi is located in the west of the Taihang Mountains, hence its name. In the Spring and Autumn Period, the territory was mostly owned by the state of Jin, so Shanxi is called as “Jin”. S hanxi, “Jin” for short, is in the west of Taihang Mountains and the east of Yellow River. Shanxi is located in the west of the Taihang Mountains, hence its name. In the Spring and Autumn Period, the territory was mostly owned by the state of Jin, so Shanxi is called as “Jin”. As one of the birthplaces of Chinese nation, it has a long history, a rich culture and abundant historic and cultural heritages. To date, it has a history of about 3,000 years according to written records. It has been known as “Museum of Ancient Chinese Culture” and “Cradle of Chinese Civilization”. As a mountainous area, Shanxi is the only province in China with one of Top Five Mountains, one of Top Five Towns and one of Top Four Buddhist Mountains. Shanxi covers an area of 156,579 km2 in total and a population of over 34.100 million in total.

S hanxi is in the middle of Yellow River Basin, and the contour of the province is a parallelogram slightly inclining to northeast from southwest. Most of the areas are mountains and hills, taking up over 80% of the total area of the province.

T here are the great Taihang Moutains in the east adjacent to Hebei Province, and Yellow River in the south and west separating Shanxi from Shaanxi Province and Henan Province, and the Great Wall in the north adjacent to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The famous poet in the Tang Dyanasty, Liu Zongyuan, described it as strategically located and difficult to access. Shanxi got its name as most part of the province lies in the west of the Taihang Mountain and east of the Lvliang Mountain and the Yellow River.

L ocated in the middle temperate and warm temperate monsoon climate zone, Shanxi has a temperate continental climate. The annual average highest temperature in the whole province is 12°C to 20°C, and the annual average lowest temperature is -4°C to -7°C. The annual frost-free period is 4 to 7 months from north to south. The annual average precipitation in most parts is 400 mm to 650 mm.

T he five characteristic cultural industry zones of Shanxi are Buddhism and Frontier Cultural Industry Zone, Shanxi Merchant Cultural Industry Zone, Ancestral Cultural Industry Zone, Taihang Cultural Industry Zone, and Yellow River Cultural Industry Zone.

S hanxi is in the inland of the eastern coast of China, surrounded by mountains, thus getting little influence from sea breeze, and a strong continental climate is formed here. Meanwhile, the northern area is cold by the control of the Inner Mongolia winter cold air mass. The climate characteristics of Shanxi are long winter with cold and dry weather, short summer with hot weather and plentiful rainfall, windy and dusty spring with big temperature difference, and short and warm autumn.
