GEOGRAPHYCULTURE

CULTURE

S ong – and – Dance Duet also called Turn and Turn, is a unique folk opera art originated from Northeast China and highly popular with local people due to its strong indigenous flavor. Evolved as the combination of multiple art forms like Northeast-styled Yangko, Local Fork Songs and Hebei Lotus Rhyme, Song – and – Dance Duet can trace its history back to the last years of Qing Dynasty.

P erformed in three major forms, namely solo, duet, and multi-actor performance, Song – and – Dance Duet usually brings audience with stories excerpted from the classic literature and the Chinese opera masterpieces like Romance of the West Chamber, Blue Bridge, Spring Outing of Yangba Sister, Yanqing Sells Silk Threads, Xunyang Pavilion, which usually narrate legends about brave and justice heroes, the romance of pure love, and people with great virtues and goodness. In plain language easy for everybody to comprehend, coupled with body gestures refined from daily life, Song – and – Dance Duet is good at bringing a sense of intimate familiarity to its audience. Jilin North Mountain, located to the northwest of Jilin City of Jilin Province, is home to a well known temple landscape complex. Once called Nine Dragon Mountain, Jilin North Mountain only consists of two opposing peaks facing eastwards and westwards at a modest height of two hundred meters each.

H owever, it has gained tremendous popularities in virtue of four time-honored temples (Temple of Guan Yu, Temple of King of Medicine, and Kanli Palace, Pavilion of Jade Emperor) dotted among the east peak and the trademark temple fair with a history of over two hundred years. Among all ancient architectures erecting at the North Mountain, the Temple of Guan Yu is the oldest one and built during years under the reign of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty. A tablet inscribed with four characters “灵著幽岐” (meaning god-made serene gorge) is hung high above the major hall of the temple. Also inscribed on the jade stone tablet of the temple is a poem written by Emperor Kangxi titled Sailing on Songhua River. Jilin thus gained another name of River City due to one line of the poem saying “dragon is startled by the massive boat fleets sailing straight down the river along the River City”.

J ilin north mountain temple fair, as the biggest and most influencing temple fair in Northeast China, has gained its reputation as early as in Qing Dynasty, which could be proved by a saying popular then of “Qianshan Mountain Temple overshadows all its counterparts in Northeast China, yet, its temple fair is overshadowed by that in North Mountain Temple”. After the establishment of new China, North Mountain Temple Fair has been built into a grand bustling fair for trade and tourism.
