CULTURE

A ccording to historical records, Li was an indigenous ethnic group in Sanya and even Hainan, dating back to the “Sai people”, “Qi people”, “Run people”, and “Meifu people” in the New Stone Age. They have 5 local dialects, namely, Jiamao, Qi, Lao, local dialect and Meifu. According to their dressing, they could be divided into “Li people in long-straight skirt”, “Li people in short-straight skirt”, “Li people in multi adornment” and “Li people in single adornment”.

B efore Sanya was known to others, the industrial Li people had conducted slash-and-burn farming, displaying their unique culture and magnificent brocade art, and simple and honest folklore. It is worth mentioning that the coconut is a precious present of the Li people for their friends and relatives, the more the better. Traditional Architecture The boat-shaped house is the traditional residence of Sanya Li people with the most typical ethnic and local characteristics: The front presents in a rectangle and the whole house is composed of the front porch and the bedroom. The entire roof is like a small boat, and the main part is of a bamboo framework which is bundled up by rattan, straightly leading to the ground from the thatched roof. Free from compartments, it has the hinged door with extending eaves, under which it is used for rest and storage. In most cases, no windows are designed.

I t is said that windows will usher in the “devils”, harming human beings and livestock and spelling diseases. For this reason, the boat-shaped house is gloomy inside and poor in ventilation and light. Unique Folklore Li people in Hainan Province worship ancestry and nature, believing in “animism”. In most cases, they stay together by surnames. In the past, Brides used not to stay at the homes of the grooms. Li women wore edge-to-edge and button-less blouses and tube skirts, and pullover blouses in certain places, with their hair tied behind with bone tubes. They also wore embroidered scarves, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Traditionally, Li women had tattoos, usually on their faces, back of the hands and ankles while Li men had their hair braided and twisted to their forehead or back of the heads. There is no collar for the upper outer garment which is edge-to-edge.

W hen one dies, Li people will shoot in the air giving the obituary notice, and inter him in the public cemetery of their village. Traditional Art The earliest Chinese cotton textile reformer Ms. Huang Daopo had learnt cotton textile technology from the Li women living in Yazhou (today’s Sanya City), Hainan Island, and then the technology was introduced into the Central Plains. Li women mainly used lap looms. When weaving, they sit on the ground, strapped with canes, and tread the loom. In most cases, Li’s brocade adopted black or dark blue as the basic color, mixed with red, yellow, green, and white, and dotted with purple, brown, pink, and coffee. It usually took 3 or 4 months to complete a piece of brocade. People of all ethnic groups in Sanya are intelligent and diligent, good at singing and dancing, thus having created their time-honored culture and art.

T hey still keep their unique culture and customs and attract numerous domestic and international tourists with their full-bodied local flavor, colorful ethnic elegance and arts. As the representative of Sanya dance art, Li and Miao singing and dancing originated from the basic movements of hunting and farming and traditional folk songs.

D uring the harvest seasons, the Spring Festival, and Double Third Day, Li and Miao families will go to an open land, lighting torches, ringing gongs, and having “Deer Dancing, “Deer Returning” and “Coconut Dancing” to enjoy themselves. Their Bamboo-pole Dancing has been rated as a national excellent dance and one of the repertoires of the national minorities.
